"Oh bloody hell," Ruby muttered beneath her breath as she tried to balance carrying her bookbag, her Quidditch robes, the birthday present for her little brother, and her irate cat down the stairs from the dormitories all at once. It was a bit silly to attempt to carry so many things down at once but Ruby was an optimistic young woman and she had high hopes of managing the feat with little to no injuries. Alas, that was not to be so. The laces of her shoes were not so tightly tied and she soon tripped in her descent down the stairs, her belongings tumbling out of her arms and she herself catapulting to near certain death (or at least humiliation) if she was not saved in the next thirty seconds.

Matthias' face was ablaze with joy. A sturdy, polished broom balanced delicately atop his two upturned palms, the silvery inscription "Preußische Besen® - PB700 Einigkeit" shimmering in the playful flicker of the nearby fire's light. What a day! He certainly had not so soon expected to behold such a masterpiece of near-fictional reputation; it had been mere days since Preußische Besen®'s newest release had hit the German shelves. "A new broom for a new era," he read aloud, proudly, now excitedly skimming through the pamphlet he had extracted from the now tattered and strewn-about packaging box.

"Preußische Besen® is dedicated to the production of..." He skipped ahead several sections to, "Model History."

"1700-1701 : PB000 König"
"1701-1794 : PB100 - PB123 Ritter Series"
"1794-1872 : PB200 - PB232 Erleuchtung Series"
"1872-1914 : PB300 - PB326 Reich Series"
"1914-1917 : PB400 - PB405 Rhein Series"
"1917-1918 : PB350 - PB352 Reich II Series"
"1918-1935 : PB500 - PB507 Gerechtigkeit Series"
"1935-1945 : PB1000 - PB1008 Neues Reich Series"
"1945-1997 : PB600 - PB612 Freiheit Series"
"1997 : PB700 Einigkeit"

---

Finally! The newest addition to his intimate family of brooms, hailing from the finest broommakers east of the Rhine. Matthias simply could not wait to break it in-

How could anyone ignore such a raucous? It were as if a thousand thunderstorms had come plummeting down the dormitory staircase. Matthias hopped back a few steps [just in case], clasping his beloved in his right hand, waiting for the source of the auditory monster to poke it's head around the winding tower's curved corner. Here it came!

It took an incalculably short amount of time for Matthias to recognize this poor girl's danger and act accordingly. In the blink of a particularly keen eye, his new prize had left his hand and gone flying through the air like a spear, striking the staircase as though a bullet right below Ruby's left foot. Once foot had made contact with broom, back came the Einigkeit, magically toting Ruby by a single appendage across the Common Room as all of the tumbling items she had been attempting to carry down the stairs came to an abrupt, cacophonous halt in the large, stone, arched door frame. Soon enough, Ruby herself had halted, her hair a bit messy and one of her sleeves torn, resting in a soft chair directly below the aerial location at which the broom had decided to release her [at quite a frightening speed].

Ruby squealed in surprise as she found herself magically toted across the room at an alarming speed and dropped into the nearest available armchair. For a few minutes, the blonde Leovus sat very still, as she tried to ease her heartbeat to a normal speed. It was beating faster then the wings of a Snitch against her chest and she pressed her hand just below the hollow of her throat. Oh sweet Merlin, what had just happened? Though her vocal chords were quivering and her chest was heaving, she held back the urge to scream at the top of her lungs. Instead of tripping and breaking her neck on the circular stairs, she was swept up by a broom mid-fall and escorted by the foot to her present location. Taking a deep breath, Ruby rose from the chair, trembling a bit as she moved to see who had come to her rescue.

"Whoa, Falke. Nice reflexes there," she grinned nervously as she brushed down her golden tresses with the deft fingers of a Quidditch player. She was a bit disappointed, really, that her life hadn't flashed before her eyes before the plummet. Of course, she was extremely grateful to her fellow Leovus for saving her from a broken nose. She shouldn't be surprised, really, as Matthias was on the Quidditch team. She herself had just joined the house team in 1996 as a reserve and was upped to a regular position this year. "I'm pretty sure that you just saved my life." Her belongings were now spread across the stone arch of the staircase but that was of little concern to Ruby at the moment.

"...Oh! Er." Matthias laughed nervously. In truth, he wasn't entirely sure it had been his reflexes that had saved Ruby from a broken limb...the broom seemed nearly to have a mind of its own. "My...this here." He held up the Einigkeit for Ruby's perusal. "Well, it's a good broom. Seems to...read my mind almost. All I really had to do was think." Matthias averted his eyes from Ruby to his broom, the smile on his face widening within the context of a growing realization of his Quidditch partner's grandeur.

Moment upon moment of admiration grew into a full minute of a silence that was undoubtedly awkward for Ruby. Eventually, falling out of his mesmerizing trance, Matthias began to formulate meaningful speech. "So uh..." His gaze fell away from his glorified stick. "What were you trying to accomplish with all that?" He waved his arm in the general direction of the cluttered archway.
